Happy Wednesday! G and I are binge watching Shark Tank which is our favorite show, but I wanted to take a break and let you know about this weeks wine. We decided to go with Clos Du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Fun fact, G and I went to Napa about a year or so ago for a friends wedding and this was our last winery stop before we headed out. G gave me strict orders not to let him join another wine club and of course I went to the restroom and came back to find out that we were now members! So this is a bottle from one of their quarterly wine club shipments. It is on the pricer side at about $50 per bottle and you could probably find it at your local BevMo! or liquor store.
Anyways this bottle of wine was great! My thoughts were that it was really fruity and had a little funk or earth to the taste. I didn’t get much bitterness, so I don’t think that this wine would need to age any longer.
G thought that this was a fantastic Napa Valley Cab, but it will greatly improve with more cellar time (agree to disagree I guess). When he first tasted the wine right out of the bottle it was really closed off and there was not a lot going on. After decanting for an hour the wine started to open up and display notes of fresh red berries (raspberries, cranberries and blueberries) on the nose with hints of cedar, oak, dark cherry and vanilla. The wine is full bodied with plenty of French Oak and grippy tannins on the palate. The palate also displayed notes of blackberries, leather, earth and black pepper. While the wine was delicious, he will be saving his additional bottles of this vintage for at least 5-10 more years in the cellar and is looking forward to watching it develop and evolve over time.
