Wine Wednesday | Simpler Wines Rose

IMG_5329

With the rising temps here in Denver I wanted to cool things down with this refreshing can of rose. I really liked the Simpler Wines White wine so I figured I should also try the rose. I really liked this wine. It is nothing fancy and great for a low key afternoon.

Here were G’s more descriptive thoughts: “The wine was crisp, refreshing, with a hint of strawberry up front, and a very bland finish.” I asked him if he would repurchase or recommend this wine and his response was “No I wouldn’t buy it again”.  He did preface it by saying that it would probably be good to purchase if you were having a large party outdoors since it would save on cost while still providing your guests with an alcoholic beverage. I would also add that the cans are fun and would be a great addition for a party. On a regular Sunday afternoon though, I would encourage you to treat yo self! To something a little better.

Cheers!

Wine Wednesday | Soter Vineyards North Valley Pinot Noir

Happy Wednesday! I went to a team building event last night where we threw axes in batting cages. It was so cool and such a different activity. I highly recommend going to the Axe Room in Denver if you are close and if not see if there is something available in your city.

Anyways back to the regularly scheduled program of wine which is a good one, I mean really good! A little back story on this wine is that G and I visited this Soter on a past trip to Oregon. The winery is so cool and really unlike anything that I have seen before. The property has about 4 or 5 houses on it and the main one is where you enter with a large great room and when the family who owns the wine lived there that was their living room/kitchen/family room. After you arrive and check in they bring your tasting group to a smaller house a few feet away and that is where you sit at a large table and do the tasting. These houses would have been the kids rooms. So each little house was actually an entire room for the kids and parents. It was such a cool idea and the property is beautiful.

Now for the wine. I had one taste and I was like WOW! This stuff is good! I had forgotten how good it was. It is so smooth with some dark cherries and cola taste. It is honestly the best red wine I have had!

Here are G’s notes: This is a great example of Pinot Noir from the Pacific Northwest. The nose brings notes of strawberry, rhubarb, cherry cola, flint and wet tobacco. The wine has light body with medium acidity. The palate follows through with tart cherry and cola. This is very well balanced wine that has plenty of fruit but also some earthy tones. Good wine for the price of $35.

We ended up purchasing this bottle at the vineyard but we have seen it Molly’s. If you see it at your local wine store I highly encourage you to pick it up.

Wine Wednesday | Wente Riva Ranch Chardonnay

Happy Wednesday! This week has been dragging and I can’t believe we are only half way there! But on the bright side I have this 2015 Wente – Riva Ranch – Chardonnay to cheer me up a little. And it really was just a little because I didn’t love this wine as much as some of the other chardonnays that I have had. I tasted some oak but thought it lacked that buttery taste and had more of a steely or tart taste that I don’t enjoy as much.

It’s odd because I have liked prior vintages of this wine a lot but for some reason this vintage did not sit well with me. So if you are in the market I would check out a prior vintage as well to see if that is something you might like better.

G had this to say about it: “The wine has a golden yellow hue with creme brûlée, vanilla and Asian pear on the nose. The wine is full bodied and rich for a chardonnay. The palate brings notes of butter, pineapple, vanilla, toasted oak and pear. This is a fantastic California chardonnay and the price to quality ratio is amazing. Wente is known as the first family of Chardonnay and this budget friendly wine upholds that legacy.”

Cheers!

Wine Wednesday | Clos Du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Happy Wednesday! G and I are binge watching Shark Tank which is our favorite show, but I wanted to take a break and let you know about this weeks wine. We decided to go with Clos Du Val Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Fun fact, G and I went to Napa about a year or so ago for a friends wedding and this was our last winery stop before we headed out. G gave me strict orders not to let him join another wine club and of course I went to the restroom and came back to find out that we were now members! So this is a bottle from one of their quarterly wine club shipments. It is on the pricer side at about $50 per bottle and you could probably find it at your local BevMo! or liquor store.

Anyways this bottle of wine was great! My thoughts were that it was really fruity and had a little funk or earth to the taste. I didn’t get much bitterness, so I don’t think that this wine would need to age any longer.

G thought that this was a fantastic Napa Valley Cab, but it will greatly improve with more cellar time (agree to disagree I guess).  When he first tasted the wine right out of the bottle it was really closed off and there was not a lot going on. After decanting for an hour the wine started to open up and display notes of fresh red berries (raspberries, cranberries and blueberries) on the nose with hints of cedar, oak, dark cherry and vanilla. The wine is full bodied with plenty of French Oak and grippy tannins on the palate. The palate also displayed notes of blackberries, leather, earth and black pepper. While the wine was delicious, he will be saving his additional bottles of this vintage for at least 5-10 more years in the cellar and is looking forward to watching it develop and evolve over time.

Wine Wednesday | Wente Cabernet Sauvignon

Wednesday already! This week is flying by and am not mad about that. This week’s wine is brought to you by G. I feel like Wente has been in the rotation ever since I met him almost 10 (!) years ago. This cab gave be a strong berry flavor (dark red cherries, cranberries) with a hint of pepper. I really like this wine and it is a winner in my book. It also comes in at $12 a bottle which is insane! We picked this bottle up at Molly’s, but I am sure you could find it at your local grocery or liquor store as well.

We paired this with a delicious filet mignon that we picked up from where else, Trader Joe’s. I also made some green beans topped with honey roasted almonds and I think it was the perfect pairing for this wine.

Enjoy!

Wine Wednesday | Rebuttel

IMG_5040

Half way through the week and feeling good about it! Finally got myself a new phone (goodbye busted iPhone 7, hello iPhoneX!) so that has been the highlight so far, and this wine has been a close second,

If you are new here then you may not know that Chardonnay is my wine of choice. I love a good buttery Chardonnay which I know is not everyones preference. What I love about the Rebuttel wine is that it does have hints of butter but it also has a little tart to it as well. I find that it has a really nice balance between butter and steel.

I was able to snag this wine at Trader Joe’s for $6.99! I think this price is insane for the quality of wine you are getting. In all honesty I paired this with a clementine and Brussel Sprouts which I wouldn’t recommend, but it would be great with some seafood or a veggie tray.

Cheers!

Wine Wednesday | Simpler Wines

IMG_4979

Ah Wednesday! I am really excited about this Wine Wednesday because A. It’s wine in a can and B. It’s cheap! I stubbled across Simpler Wines this past weekend at Trader Joe’s and decided to give it a try. G was quick to scoff at it saying that this will probably be the worst wine I have ever had, and I am so happy to be able to prove him wrong 🙂

He thought that this wine was produced by the same people who make Simpler Times Beer which he said was the worst beer that he has ever tasted, but this wine is actually produced by Trader Joe’s.

They have three different variations of this wine, the White that I tried, Rose and Peach. They come in a four pack and are only $3.99! For the price of this wine, I cannot believe how great it is. I had it on Sunday and usually will only have a glass but it was so good I had two cans! The White wine is so light and refreshing with a hint of sweetness. It is effervescent which I like and it would be the perfect drink for the summer. I highly recommend grabbing a four pack next time you are in Trader Joe’s.

Cheers!
